On Thursday, December 10, DLs had a great opportunity to have lunch with two of the commercial real estate industry's Leaders and Legends. The Peterson Companies is celebrating its 50th anniversary. During that time period, they have developed over 34 million square feet of office, retail and hotel space and more than 26,000 residential lots in the great Washington region. The Petersons and their partners are known as placemakers, creating communities such as Burke Centre, Fair Lakes, Virginia Gateway and the jewel in their crown, National Harbor. The company was recently recognized as NAIOP Northern Virginia's Firm of the Year. Our legend, Milt Peterson, has a long history of engagement in the community and our industry. Our leader, Jon Peterson became a NAIOP member in his early 20s and has never wavered from the organization. Many NAIOP members are focused on the continued evolution of Tysons, one of the largest commercial markets in the United States with approximately 26.8 million square feet of office space and 6 million square feet of retail. Planning for a "new" Tysons has been underway for years with a goal of creating a 24-hour urban center where people live, work and play. With the opening of the Silver Line, the cranes are finally in the air and the transformation is occurring. On November 3, please join NAIOP Northern Virginia for the first of a two part series highlighting the projects that are changing the face of Tysons.

Created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1995, the Partnership's mission is "cultivating new business investment, fostering international trade growth and encouraging the expansion of existing Virginia businesses." Briley has 30 years of leadership experience in local, state, national, and international business development and management. Previously, he served as Executive Director of the Prince William County Department of Economic Development, whose economic development success rose from an annual average of $20 million to $250 million per year, totaling $3.46 billion of announced investment. Such success was noted by CNN Money which ranked Prince William #13 nationwide for job growth for the ten-year period of his tenure.

Economic development is the number one priority of Governor Terry McAuliffe. During his fifteen months in office, he has enticed numerous businesses to make commitments to the Commonwealth, and he has done this with the assistance of the VEDP. New Member Orientation

New members who joined NAIOP since October of 2014 attended the first New Member Orientation for 2015. The Orientations are held throughout the year to welcome new members. These events are designed to provide new members with an overview of the association, and information on the opportunities that exist for further involvement in the Northern Virginia chapter. Several NAIOP Northern Virginia Board Members were on hand to provide updates on various chapter activities. Attendees also received information and first-hand testimony on the value of membership in the following areas:

  • NAIOP Northern Virginia's legislative and local affairs efforts;
  • Networking opportunities at chapter events and special functions;
  • Educational programming designed to keep members informed;
  • The Developing Leaders Program is a program designed to address the professional needs of the chapter's 35 and younger membership segment; and

Ted Leonsis: Fifteen Years Later

Fifteen years ago, Ted Leonsis spoke to the NAIOP Northern Virginia membership as the new owner of the Washington Capitals and the President of AOL Properties Group. His remarks focused on the Internet industry, the future growth of Northern Virginia, and on his venture into the sports world.

Since then, Leonsis has created a major sports empire. His Monumental Sports & Entertainment owns and operates the Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystics (WNBA) and Verizon Center. They also operate Kettler Capitals Iceplex and the George Mason University Patriot Center as well as Monumental Network, a digital platform that serves as the hub for the region's sports and entertainment news.

Leonsis retired from AOL in 2006 and today, invests in startup companies. He is a cofounder and partner in the "speed-up capital" Revolution Growth Fund II, which has invested in companies such as: Bigcommerce; Echo360; ePals; Everyday Health; Exclusive Resorts; FedBid; Framebridge; Handybook; HelloWallet; Lolly Wolly Doodle; Optoro; Resonate; Revolution Foods; sweetgreen, and zipcar. He is also a filmmaker and digital entrepreneur and the founder and chairman of SnagFilms.

Join NAIOP Northern Virginia on January 15 for our Annual Meeting and Luncheon. When it comes to venture capital, Greater Washington falls behind other major business markets in the United States. One person who is working to change that is Paul Singh, Founder and CEO of the Disruption Corporation and Managing Partner of the Crystal Tech Fund. Singh, born, raised, educated and devoted to Northern Virginia, spent six years in Silicon Valley. While there, he co-founded an angel investment firm, 500 Startups, which has invested in over 750 companies in more than 40 countries. With the knowledge gained from his experiences starting and funding companies, he returned to Northern Virginia and is now building the Disruption Corporation, a venture capital advisory firm, and the Crystal Tech Fund. In less than a year, he is doubling his space in Crystal City and is bringing in two new partners in early 2015. Singh recently told the Washington Post that he wants to build a productivity center for entrepreneurs, which he hopes will eventually become a sustainable model for other cities.
